About No. 130
Originally painted in 2005, it was titled, “Flags of our Fathers,” as in, we inherit our fathers war and death. It was the first painting I did when I started working in oils again. It didn’t turn out well, I simply hated this picture and threw it on the wood pile. I never did end up burning it because it reminded me of what not to do and I propped it up in the corner of my studio as a reminder, it was that little devil on my shoulder. After a few years when I started the beaded curtain series, I looked it over and thought it might be salvageable. I repainted the figure, background and the material on the figure in a few hours.
