About No. 158
This originally started out as a painting of my wife, she didn’t like posing and only stood still for about 30 minutes. The only thing I could capture was an oil sketch and it remained incomplete for years. – We were married by the Justice of the Peace, without any traditional formalities and I have always imagined what she would have looked like in a wedding dress. It’s strange but, I have often felt like I didn’t deserve her and was very fortunate to have married her. I think this is a common insecurity but, there it is. When I went back to finish the painting, I wanted it to have that feeling of uncertainty, a kind of fleeting. I hated to do it but, I had to remove personal attachments. I hid her face because this wasn’t about any one person anymore and made the background ambiguous so it didn’t have a specific place. This painting is from the beaded curtain series, see the link below for more.
